CFTC’s Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee to Meet February 28

February 14, 2023

CFTC Commissioner Summer K. Mersinger, sponsor of the Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee (EEMAC), today announced the EEMAC will hold a public meeting from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday, February 28 in Nashville, Tennessee at the Nashville Public Library. Members of the public may also attend the meeting virtually and if space permits, in person.

At this meeting, the EEMAC will focus on electricity. The EEMAC will study CFTC-regulated metals markets and how those markets could grow and may experience stress due to increases in electric vehicle production. The EEMAC will also examine Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs) and how electrification and increased renewable and intermittent energy production could affect the electric grid and the FTR market. A formal agenda will be announced before the meeting. The meeting agenda may change to accommodate other EEMAC priorities. For agenda updates and more information about this advisory committee, including its members, please visit EEMAC at cftc.gov.

“After our successful first meeting in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and on the heels of establishing two EEMAC subcommittees that will study physical energy infrastructure and the metals market, I am excited to host our second meeting in Nashville, Tennessee,” said Commissioner Mersinger. “I look forward to a substantive discussion of some of the effects electrification could have on CFTC-regulated markets and how those markets, in turn, could affect American consumers. As energy production and use changes, derivatives markets must continue to play a critical role in helping meet the need for risk management, price discovery, and the physical delivery of the energy that powers our economy.”

Seating for the public may be limited due to the CDC’s COVID-19 Community Level, which may require facilitating physical distancing to avoid overcrowding and additional restrictions. Members of the public may also watch a live webcast or listen to the meeting via conference call using a domestic or international number to connect to a live, listen-only audio feed. People requiring special accommodations to attend the meeting because of a disability should notify Lauren Fulks, the EEMAC Secretary, at (816) 787-6297 or [email protected].
