CFTC EXTENDS COMMENT PERIOD ON
THE GOVERNANCE OF SELF-REGULATORY ORGANIZATIONS

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Commission) published in the Federal Register a notice extending until September 30, 2004, the public comment period on the governance of self-regulatory organizations (SROs).

On June 9, 2004, the Commission published in the Federal Register a Request for Comments on the Governance of Self-Regulatory Organizations. The Request for Comments advances the Commission’s ongoing review of self-regulation in the futures industry. The comment period for the Request was due to expire on July 26, 2004.

The Futures Industry Association requested that the comment period be extended to September 30, 2004, and other industry participants expressed their support. In response, and in order to ensure that an adequate opportunity is provided for meaningful comments, the Commission extended the comment period for the Request for Comments on the Governance of Self-Regulatory Organizations until September 30, 2004.

Concurrent with the Request for Comments, the Commission distributed to each SRO a questionnaire to help it evaluate the governance structures, policies, and procedures at each of the organizations under the Commission’s purview. Responses to the questionnaire were also due by July 26, 2004. At the request of industry participants, that deadline also extended to September 30, 2004.
